Hi, I’m Katie, I’m an award winning photographer based in the North West of England. I’ve been a keen photographer since around 2010 when I made the switch from film SLR to digital SLR. I initially predominantly did music festival and gig photography. From around 2014 my specialism has been long exposure photography. This is any photography involving a long shutter speed from around ½ second to several minutes. Longer shutter speed shots capture more light, for example capturing city lights after sunset, or the stars for astrophotography. Water is smoothed and lights from passing vehicles appear as light trails when a long shutter is used.
I was obsessed with space as a child. Visiting Greenwich in 2018, I stumbled across the Astronomy Photographer of the Year Exhibition. The inclusion of data regarding the camera, lens and settings each photographer had used to capture their images, made me realise astrophotography wasn’t just the preserve of professional astronomers in observatories, but was possible with modest equipment. I took my first astro image just before the first lockdown in 2020, and from then on was hooked. Star trails showing the apparent rotation of the stars across the sky over a period of 30+ minutes and capturing the Milky Way galactic core during spring/summer months are my specialities.
I’m honoured that my star trail image “Close Encounters of the Haslingden Kind” was Highly Commended prize winner in the People and Space category in the Astronomy Photographer of The Year award for 2023. This has opened the door to other opportunities, including participating in an astrophotography podcast, writing an article on photo processing for BBC Sky at Night Magazine and being a featured photographer on Castrol’s 2025 #Castronomy astrophotography calendar.
